The Polish name ‘Kabanos’ probably comes from the word ‘Kaban’, which translates as ‘pig’ in the area around the city of Białystok. In the 19th century, on the Polish-Lithuanian border, the word ‘Kaban’ was used to denote a male and young pig fattened mainly with potatoes.
